What Causes Sun Spots to Form on the Skin?

Published on August 18, 2017

Sun spots can be a very noticeable skin issue that can prevent you from feeling comfortable with your appearance. Sun spots are the dark patches of skin that form in areas of the body that are frequently exposed to sunlight, like the face and neck.

The reason why sun spots form is because of the effects UV radiation has on the skin. UV radiation triggers the production of melanin in the skin. Melanin is a naturally occurring pigment that is responsible for giving the skin a darker color. The melanin can form in odd-shaped spots that ruin the even complexion of your skin and give it an unhealthy appearance.

Laser facial resurfacing can effectively eliminate sun spots and can help to treat a number of other skin pigmentation issues. At Paramount Plastic Surgery, we offer laser facial resurfacing using either a CO2 laser or an erbium laser.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Keith Jeffords will evaluate the condition of your skin and will recommend which laser will be better suited to treating your sun spots. Contact us to schedule a consultation.
